Blog Post – A new generation of Punks

When I think about punks, I think of people with coloured spiky hair and ripped clothes. It all started in the 1970’s. They wanted to break away from materialism and often wore short hairstyle instead of the long and wavy hair like Farrah Fawcett. The style was t-shirts with offensive words on it. In the UK the punk fashion influenced designers such as  Vivienne Westwood, one of my personal favorite designer.

The music had a big impact on the punk culture and the name Sex Pistols comes to mind. The music was a reaction against the popular music in the 70’s, like disco which they said was superficial, and I can see how they got that idea (think Saturday Night Fever).

Now a new generation of punks has emerged. And no wonder, with demonstrations around the world and the power of social media, a new voice has risen. Neo-soul singer-songwriter Olivia-Louise uses her debut single as a form of activism. Like Sex Pistols were not afraid to use offensive language to cause a reaction neither is she with lyrics like, “our pussies aren’t for grabbing”, (I wonder where she got that line from…) There is a new generation of punks, a female lead movement and I can’t wait to hear and see more!
