UX/UI Case: Epilepsy app – Personal Project

THE PROBLEM

The way to socialize with people suffering from epilepsy is focused on different groups on Facebook and other social media.

INFORMATION:

Around 60 million people in the world are suffering from epilepsy and not everyone is the same. There are 60 different kinds of seizures but groups on social media are usually for everyone. This is great but it has also lead to a lot of different people talking about things that are not interesting for everyone.

MY ROLE:

  • Research
  • UX design
  • User test
  • UI design
  • Technology: IOS platform
  • Tools: Adobe

MY SOLUTION:

An app that makes you socialize with people suffering from epilepsy and their families. Based on your interest you can find a specific group for your needs and find new friends. This app will be your friend in your pocket, with all the practical information such as your doctor’s appointments and medications.

RESEARCH:

I have conducted my research in two steps. Researching the markets and conducting user interviews.

THE MARKETS:

I found apps that focused on socializing and an app focusing on tracking your seizures but none that combines them both.

USER INTERVIEWS:

I asked the biggest Facebook group to see what ages people had and see what kind of interest they had for the app.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER:

The research helped me understand what the user for the app wants.

From this research I decided on the following user personas:

The newly diagnosed epilepsy person and the family member.

BREAKING DOWN THE PROCESS:

The next step is to understand what functions the app itself would have. I made an easy user map to see how the users would navigate the app.

THE FUNCTIONS:

  • Practical information such as doctor’s appointments and phone numbers, medication etc.
  • Search for groups to socialize in.
  • Chat function.

JOURNEY MAP:

Jane’s journey: Jane finds the app and is worried about her sick child. She looks for the forum and searches for groups to join. Finds a suitable group and start discussing. Answering to messages from another concerned mother from private chat.

John’s journey: Finds the app while discussing with his doctor. Adding information about his doctor and medication to get started. Search for groups and find support. Starts joining several groups and connecting with both local and international friends.

PROTOTYPE:

I designed two iterations for this app based on feedback. I made the prototypes in Adobe XD.

USER TEST:

After this, I conducted a user test with my low-fi, clickable prototype with two users. I noticed that there were two issues with my design. The lack of good search function and an easy looking profile page.

SECOND ITERATION:

During this iteration I put to practice what the user tests showed.

SECOND PROTOTYPE

During the second stage, I focused on combining the UX and UI. Finalizing with colours and fonts.
